01 ABOUT
Jen Peters started dancing before she ever set foot in a dance studio. She fell in love with movement, and has been a student of falling ever since. Thanks to her early training with the late Jill Wagoner Johnson, she learned to maintain her childlike joy and creativity, within the discipline and rigor of classical ballet and modern dance training.
After graduating from The Ailey School/Fordham University under the direction of Denise Jefferson and Ana Marie Forsythe, Jen danced with Jennifer Muller/The Works for eight years, and also performed with Pascal Rekoert/Flexicurve and The New York City Opera. Jen has taught and performed throughout the U.S., and in China, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Brazil, and Germany.
Since 2005, she has served the dance community as a writer for Dance Magazine, Dance Spirit, Dance Teacher, and Pointe. She is currently a columnist for Dance Teacher, writing a "What My Teacher Taught Me" section. Jen also earned her Pilates mat and equipment certification from The Kane School. She teaches Pilates and the Gyrotonic Expansion Method at MOVE Wellness in Ann Arbor. She received an MFA in Dance from the University of Michigan, where she researched dance studio architecture and the creative process, an investigation titled The Studio Project. She developed an immersive dance theater work, A Studio Party, informed by improvisation, storytelling, physical memories, and dance history. Jen served as a rehearsal director for the UM Department of Dance since 2018, working with artists from Urban Bush Women, Bryn Cohn, Thaddeus Davis and Tanya Wideman, Rosanna Tavarez, among others. She is now a Lecturer of Dance for the UM School of Music, Theatre & Dance. Jen is also incredibly thankful for her husband and three children, who inspire new dance movement daily.
